Karla Swindle has always had a profound love for animals. This passion led her to open S & K Quarter Horses Farm in Fayette, Alabama, where she cares for horses and other animals.

In March, a 22-year-old mare gave birth to a foal named Tye. This should have been a joyous event. Sadly, just seven days later, the mare fell seriously ill and died. The young foal was left heartbroken, facing life’s challenges without his mother.

An Unexpected Friend
After the mare’s death, Karla spent time with Tye in the barn, trying to comfort him. That night, her dog, Zip, joined them. To Karla’s surprise, Zip refused to leave. He nestled close to Tye, offering his presence as comfort.
“He was whining,” Karla shared. “You could tell that Zip knew something was wrong that night.”
Zip sensed Tye’s grief and stayed by his side, trying to ease his pain. This scene deeply moved Karla, shedding tears alongside the grieving foal and the comforting dog.

“Every time I went to the barn, Zip would run ahead to the stall and wait for me,” Karla recalled. “He got there before me every time.”
She added, “If the foal were lying down, Zip would go over and rest his head on him.”
With Zip around, Tye felt relaxed and happier. Zip’s presence was a balm for his wounded heart.
Growing Into a Healthy Horse
Months passed, and Tye began to thrive. He gained weight, grew into a healthy, beautiful horse, and overcame the sadness of losing his mother.
Throughout this journey, Zip watched over Tye with pride. As Tye’s adoptive dad, Zip played a crucial role in helping him flourish.
