An old saying goes that rescuing dogs is a cocktail of heartache and relief, half and half. And it couldn’t be more on the point.
When you stumble upon strays or deserted animals, your heart shatters. You see their pain and struggle and wish you could save them all.
But then comes the other half – relief. Relief washes over you when you see a rescued pup safe and sound, and you look forward to a future filled with love and care in a new family.
These are the priceless moments any pet lover yearns for. Today, we’ll delve into one such inspiring tale where a dog was saved from euthanasia by a compassionate man.

Meet Gregory, the Beagle who can’t hide his joy. It’s unfortunate but ordinary these days for owners to surrender their pets for euthanization when medical bills pile up.
Gregory was on the brink of being put down when Joe Kirk stepped in, saving him two days before the scheduled euthanization.
Joe and his wife, Schenley, run Hound Rescue and Sanctuary, a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing animals. Based in Findlay, Ohio, their mission is to help neglected animals find new homes and provide foster care for older, unadoptable dogs.

Schenley shared on Facebook, “Gregory is one of the most thankful and appreciative Beagles! He KNOWS he is SAFE!” Despite being heartworm-positive and needing treatment, Gregory knew he was in good hands.
Under the Kirks’ care, Gregory began his new journey. They promptly took him to a vet for his heartworm disease treatment.
Soon after, they listed him for adoption. Luck was on Gregory’s side, and he didn’t have to wait long. A loving family came forward to adopt him, and before long, he was off to his forever home.

Gregory is relishing his time with his new family and Beagle sibling. Schenley beautifully said, “We are often asked how many dogs we have saved. The answer that always comes to mind is, we have saved one more.”
That’s one more dog safe, loved, and respected. One more dog adequately fed and given necessary veterinary care—one more dog with a loving forever home. Nothing can be more fulfilling.

This heartwarming story emphasizes the power of kindness. It shows us that a bit of compassion can transform a life, especially for dogs, and there’s always room to extend a helping hand to those in need.
