Often, the golden oldies of the dog world, the senior shelter dogs, are overlooked. Many potential pet owners focus on puppies and younger dogs, bypassing the older, love-filled seniors who want a home.

Shey, a 14-year-old miniature poodle, is one such dog. He’s deaf, half-blind, mostly toothless, yet full of spirit. After his previous family moved without him, Shey found himself at the Animal Rescue League of Iowa. His health was poor; suffering from an untreated dental disease that left him with only one tooth. Despite these challenges, Shey’s loving spirit remained unbroken.
Shey’s chances of finding a new home seemed slim. For four long months, he watched other dogs find their forever homes while he was repeatedly passed over. Yet, Shey had so much love to give, if only someone would take a chance on him.

Enter Tristan, a young boy visiting the shelter with his mother, searching for a small dog to love. Seeing the potential match, the shelter staff eagerly introduced Tristan to Shey. The connection was instant and undeniable.
“Shey was very comfortable with Tristan from the beginning,” a shelter representative told The Dodo. Trust flowed between them, igniting Tristan’s face with joy as he petted Shey.

When informed about Shey’s unique needs, Tristan wasn’t discouraged. With mature understanding, he took in all the information, ready to do whatever was necessary to keep Shey happy and comfortable. Tristan asked questions and noted future vet appointments for Shey’s care.
Where others saw “too much work” or a “damaged” dog, Tristan saw Shey for who he truly is – a wonderful, loving pup in need of love.

Now, Shey wakes up daily feeling loved and safe in his new home. He has a family that cherishes him for who he is. Tristan’s unwavering affection and care always meet Shey’s needs. The little poodle, once overlooked, now lives a blissful life with a family who sees his true worth.
